Inspiration: Where to Find it

Have you been to the garden center lately? It’s the time of year when the greenhouse benches are overflowing with amazing annuals in all colors and textures. It can be a bit overwhelming, yes?

Annuals at Gardener's Supply in Burlington, VT

I was walking through our garden center in Burlington last week, looking for respite from the April showers that have continued into May. It’s always a treat to see the greenhouse benches are overflowing with amazing annuals in all colors and textures.

It can be a bit overwhelming, yes?

In my work as a landscaper, I often have the privilege of designing planters for some of my clients. I can hardly believe they let me do the fun part.

When I first started, I’d sometimes find myself in the middle of a greenhouse with nothing in my cart — just kind of stunned by all the possibilities. You know, like the kid in the candy store, complete with the “sugar coma.”

Now, I go in with a list, whether it’s for clients or for me. I jot down the size of the container, information about the site (shady or sunny) and maybe a thought or two about color. And I stick to the list.

However, before you make the list, get inspired. The best way to do that? Look at what other gardeners are doing, and use their ideas to spark your creativity. Here are two ways to start:

  • Browse through our Planter Idea Book. It shows some of the gorgeous planters that are featured on the pages of our web site and catalog. Most designs come with a list of the featured plants.
  • Check out My Best Planters, a slideshow of creations by your fellow gardeners. Have a planter you’re especially proud of? Please share it in My Best Planters.

Once you’re good and inspired, make your list and head off to the candy store. And stick to the list!

…”When I first started, I’d sometimes find myself in the middle of a greenhouse with nothing in my cart — just kind of stunned by all the possibilities.” – That’s me! I take my big ol’ nursery cart dreaming of loading it up and I end up walking away with little or nothing because I suffer a sort of “floral overload”…lol :o)

…Thank you for the links, I am gonna look into those.

    …Blessings… :o)
